Engineering lecturers at UK further education colleges are to be given the chance to apply for up to GBP 10,000 of private funding in order to send them out into industry, in a bid to bring FE engineering teaching more into line with industry developments The initiative, the New Engineering Fellowship Scheme, created by the New Engineering Foundation is backed by a grant from The Gatsby Technical Trust, a private institution dedicated to develop UK teaching skills in science, maths, design and technology

Chief Executive of the New Engineering Foundation, Professor Sa'ad Medhat commented: "One of the greatest challenges for policy makers in the UK today is solving the chronic skills shortage in the science, engineering and technology (SET) sectors".

"Finding a resolution to this skills shortage is key to developing a competitive, leading edge economy, capable of sustaining wealth creation and improving the overall standard of living".

"We appreciate the challenges that the FE sector has in front of it, particularly in articulating the expected student growth and providing the skills required by industry to meet today's technological advances".

"We feel that by developing a closer link between industry and education we can best address the needs of both sides that students are taught the latest and most apt skills for their engineering careers".

"We are aware that there is something of an image problem for 'old engineering' in the UK - and through the New Engineering Fellowship Scheme we are taking this problem to task to make today's engineering more sexy and more popular with students".

"We need to give new engineering a higher profile in the UK, and the best place to start is by empowering those who teach our students".

Lecturers will be required to spend three weeks in industry or in an engineering and technology centre of a university to enhance their knowledge and skills.

In addition, the grant can also be used by the college to pay towards the cost of temporary teaching staff covering for the lecturers during the secondment period.

The New Engineering Fellowship Scheme is also receiving great support from many agencies and association such as the regional development agencies, the Association of Colleges, Learning and Skills Council, and the Sector Skills Development Agency.
