Korea adopts DeviceNet

An ODVA product story
Edited by the Engineeringtalk editorial team Jun 6, 2005

DeviceNet has been adopted by the Korean Agency for Technology and Standards as an industrial standard for the Republic of Korea.

ODVA has announced that DeviceNet has been adopted by the Korean Agency for Technology and Standards as an industrial standard for the Republic of Korea.

This announcement, by one of the world's leading technology countries, reaffirms the confidence that both industry and governments have placed in this proven technology as a future-proof solution for automation applications in the coming years.

The Korean economy is world's 12th largest economy and is known for its exports in high technology products such as semiconductor equipment, as well as for automobile manufacturing and shipbuilding.

The ODVA membership includes many companies with principal places of business in Korea including some of the country's leading electronics companies such as LG Industrial Systems, Samsung Electronics Co and Rockwell Samsung.

The industrial standard for DeviceNet in Korea is recognised under KS X IEC62026, Low voltage switchgear and control gear, Parts 1 and 3.

DeviceNet can be justifiably claimed to be one of the most globally standardised networks in the industrial arena.

It has been adopted by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) under IEC62026-3 for low voltage switchgear and control gear and the corresponding European standard, EN50325-2.

DeviceNet has been approved as a national standard in China, where the specification has been made part of the first Chinese national standard to encompass fieldbus technology - GB/T18858 Low voltage switchgear and control gear controller-device interface.

It is also recognised as a standard in the semiconductor industry under the SEMI E54 standard for sensor bus network communications.

With DeviceNet's lower layers built on CAN, the technology is thus compliant with the ISO11898 CAN standard.

ODVA expects that this announcement will result in the expanded adoption of the DeviceNet technology in new markets and applications.

"DeviceNet is already the leading fieldbus in Korea", states Ik-Young Cho, Manager of ODVA TAG Korea.

"As a result of DeviceNet's acceptance as a Korean Industrial Standard, DeviceNet usage in Korea will expand beyond manufacturing automation to include public projects such as roads, waste and water treatment and power stations".

DeviceNet has an installed base numbering in the millions of nodes and continues to grow at double-digit rates.

"The Asia-Pacific market is very strong for DeviceNet", said Katherine Voss, Executive Director of ODVA.

"The acceptance of DeviceNet as a Korean Industrial Standard ratifies the past investment that both vendors and users have made in this technology and provides them with the assurance to make continued and more extensive investments in DeviceNet solutions for an even broader range of automation applications".
