An optical instrument that introduces a whole different underwater world of an aquarium to users won a Gold Award at the betfair.com British Invention Show 2005 The Ogles Mesoscope, designed by Barry Reynolds, allows people to see the minute details of objects in water, such as corals in aquariums, which are too small to see with the naked eye

The Mesoscope won the award in the industrial category of the show awards.

The panel of judges from the British Inventor's Society put ecological and social benefits to mankind, as well as design, ingenuity and originality to the test before making their recommendations.

There were more than 200 inventions by inventors from almost a dozen countries being judged.

Commenting on his win, Reynolds said: "I am so pleased to receive this accolade".

"The response to the product from everyone who has used it so far has been amazing, and it's great to get recognition from my peers".

"It is hard as an inventor to get products noticed, especially if they're quite niche or a bit different but this award will help raise the Mesoscope's profile".

"I designed the Mesoscope specifically for hobbyists like me to be able to get a close-up look at what was actually living in the reefs in their aquariums".

"It adds a whole new dimension to the hobby, and also has great potential for research scientists as organisms that have been previously too small to see can now be observed using the Mesoscope".

"People can now see what they've been missing".

The show, now in its fifth year, is run by the British Invention Society and enjoys support from government partners including the UK Patent Office and UK Trade and Investment.

The brand new Ogles Mesoscope is an innovative optical instrument that enables the user to observe the minutiae of the underwater world and explore the previously unseen.

It allows anyone to enter the realm of the naturalist filmmaker to see alien worlds that otherwise go unnoticed.

Ideal for research and educational purposes, as well as the more serious reef-keeper hobbyists, the Ogles Mesoscope was developed to enable people to observe life within reef systems and captive environments in a noninvasive manner.

Anthony Calfo, world-renowned aquarist and aquarium industry professional, commented: "I was fascinated by the Mesoscope from the first moment I saw it".

"Peering through the device it was every bit as exciting as I'd hoped it would be".

"The underwater realm was revealed to me in a microscopic dimension that, until now, has not been practical for hobbyists or aquatic scientists to see affordably".

"The possibilities for studying, photographing and simply enjoying captive life in aquaria will be greatly expanded by this fabulous tool".
