Harman Specialty Group of Bedford, Massachusetts, is using the Omnify PLM solution to support development of its next-generation advanced audio technologies.

Harman Specialty Group of Bedford, Massachusetts, is using the Omnify PLM solution to support development of its next-generation advanced audio technologies Harman Specialty Group is a collection of Harman International Industries' highest quality consumer audio brands, including Mark Levinson, Revel and Lexicon

In order to successfully produce advanced audio technologies, Harman's engineering team needed to gain control over design information.

The company's product development system was bogged down by manual, paper-based processes that caused data inaccuracies and hindered development time.

"We were looking for ways to reduce product development time, improve accuracy and efficiency and reduce the cost of development".

"This required evaluating existing processes and drastically changing the way we developed and maintained products", said Scott Douglas, Staff Technical Specialist.

"We chose the Omnify PLM solution over several other competing products, including some that were in use in other divisions of Harman International".

"Omnify has lived up to our expectations by providing a very easy-to-use but powerful tool", he added.

Omnify's open and flexible PLM solution allowed Harman to quickly import and cleanse data relating to more than 30,000 parts and to assign part numbers based on their schemas in order to import and export data from its Minx ERP system.

"Having the ability to export information from the Omnify database into the Minx ERP system was critical to eliminate duplicate data entry", said Douglas.

"In addition, being able to pull information from ERP into the Omnify database has given engineers visibility into extended information such as costs, lead times and vendor status to help them make better design decisions".

Omnify's direct interface to Harman's engineering design tool, DxDesigner from Mentor Graphics, has provided engineers with more control over their schematics because the schematics now contain the appropriate attributes from Omnify including; part values, schematic symbols, and PCB footprints.

Tedious manual processes and various silos of data have been eliminated at Harman.

All product information and documentation is managed within Omnify and accessible by all appropriate team members.

New part requests (NPRs) and engineering change orders (ECOs) are processed and routed electronically via Omnify.

"The signoff process for ECOs now ranges from a few hours to a day instead of days or weeks".

"We can check engineering change status at any time and history tracking provides accountability we didn't have before", stated Douglas.

With the Omnify PLM solution in place, Harman can maintain its position as the premiere manufacturer of audio technologies as well as easily meet its goal of pioneering new technologies and creating advances that better the audio experience.
