Changing the face of power
What is described as the most significant advance in switching power supply design for more than ten years is encompassed in Omron's new S8TS range
Omron's new S8TS range is based on a unique 'plug-together' block design, allowing the user to create collectives of 2.5, 5, 7.5 or 10A in 12 or 24VDC output voltages The S8TS is also available in 5VDC as a 5A block
"The S8TS will change the way we look at power," says Omron's Mike Irvin, who is one of the people responsible for the concept of the range.
"With it you can always 'just add a bit more power' to a control panel if you are extending it, and in new-build projects you can keep up with changing specifications without having to completely redesign the panel every time there is a modification.
You can even run components of different voltages from a single collective of S8TS".
The standard size (43 x 120 x 120 mm - W x H x D) DIN-track mounting modules make initial panel layout simple, and its versatility to accommodate changing power supply requirements maintains the ease of use no matter what alterations are required to the control panel.
No longer is it necessary for a major rework of the panel, with a complete change of the power supplies, new 43mm modules can be added as required to the maximum of 10Am per group.
Even the two bus line connectors, parallel and isolated, are supplied as standard with each unit, so they are immediately ready for use - a genuine plug-and-play solution.
The modules are connected using a supplied, keyed connector, giving the facility for parallel or isolated operation and also allowing the combination of units to create multi-voltage units.
For 12 or 24VDC output, modules can be connected together to give a power supply range of 60 to 240W for standard operation.
The range also offers the additional benefit of redundancy protection.
With the addition of an extra unit, if a module becomes defective for any reason, the additional unit will come onto line automatically to take up the shortfall in current requirements, until such time as the faulty unit is replaced.
The fault is identified by a visible under-voltage detector and also by wiring to an external alarm.
Using the isolated connector, the user can create independent groups with mixed output voltages (24, 12, 5VDC) or different capacities.
The input circuit remains connected through the unit keeping the wiring simple.
The S8TS is CE marked and approved to the latest European legislation regarding noise and emissions, so can be used in all new panel-builds as well as replacing old or failed units.
In addition, the S8TS is approved to applicable UL and CSA standards, making it the ideal choice for export contracts.
The unit also complies with the latest European EN61000-3-2 A14 regulations regarding power factor correction.
The unit is designed to accept a supply voltage between 85 and 264 VAC to allow connection to the mains supply of many countries.
And finally, there is a major cost-benefit to the user of the anticipated life expectancy of the S8TS.
