A novel multichannel power controller improves the overall performance of standard solid-state relays in a simple, compact, and cost-effective way.

Omron's newly designed multichannel power controller improves the overall performance of standard solid-state relays (SSRs) in a simple, compact, and cost-effective way.

The G3ZA employs optimum cycle control which, when used together with standard zero-switching SSRs like Omron's G3NA, achieves extremely low power noise levels that meet stringent EMC standards.

This technology significantly improves the power factor and eliminates the need for the bulky filtering installations normally associated with phase control.

In addition, the G3ZA uses half-cycle switching with a resolution of 10ms, making it ideal for multiple heating zone control where precise temperature control is crucial.

The compact G3ZA can switch up to eight SSRs in a heater system and only requires a single RS485 two-wire link to the PLC or PC.

The variable power control signal from the host is automatically converted into voltage pulses to drive the SSRs in the unit itself, so there is no need for an extra conversion unit or digital output cards.

The G3ZA is available in four versions - either with four channels (with heater burnout alarm) or eight channels, and for high- or low-voltage power supplies.

It can apply offset cycle control to reduce peak switching currents, which in turn reduces the sise of ancillary units and cabling.

This means that the total current is distributed more evenly in time, especially at lower power which is often the case when a machine runs in full production cycle.

The G3ZA not only receives power control signals from a PLC or PC via an RS485 communications link, but also sends back status information such as heater burnout detection.

As it only needs a two-wire link, the G3ZA can be located remotely from the host controller, and mounted inside the power cabinet close to the heater.

To ensure that it can be easily integrated into other components and systems, Omron has designed the G3ZA according to its Smart Platform concept.

PLC function blocks are available to significantly reduce programming time.
