When the Queen praised everyone who had contributed to the giant Falkirk Wheel, Orkot Composites took special pride in its role as the supplier of precision bearings for the 1800 ton structure.

When the Queen praised everyone who had contributed to the giant Falkirk Wheel at a stop in the Scottish leg of her golden jubilee tour, describing it as a considerable feat of modern engineering, Orkot Composites took special pride in its role as the supplier of precision bearings for the 1800 ton structure.

Replacing a flight of 11 locks to transport boats between the Forth and Clyde and the Union canals, the 115ft wheel is the centrepiece of a GBP 78 million scheme restoring the waterway between Edinburgh and Glasgow for the first time in nearly 70 years.

Boats are taken on board two gondolas or 'moving locks' able to hold 500,000 gal of water and hydraulically lifted to the next canal.

Eight or more boats are moved in just 15min compared to the 24h that a boat had taken to navigate the old locks.

Orkot is a Polymer Sealing Solutions company based in Rotherham, providing over 150 special composite bearings designed to cope with constant changes from wet to dry operation.
