Orkot TXMM low-friction and completely self-lubricating bearings were chosen by Halcrow and LG Kimber when replacing Thames flood control gates for The Environment Agency.

A 'fit and forget' spherical bearing solution was needed for the rising sector gates that must be lifted by remote control whenever needed to maintain safe river levels.

TXMM bearings were identified as the most reliable replacement for the previously used traditional bronze bearings, which required manual operation and needed regular greasing with heavy maintenance costs.

The high mechanical strength and wear resistance with virtually no swell in water of the bearings' special non-asbestos laminated material provided the superior dimensional stability needed to ensure that they could remain motionless for weeks or even months and then operate with complete reliability at a moment's notice by telemetry.

Needing no grease to maintain their low friction and stick-slip characteristics, the TXMM bearings also provided a cost-effective and pollution-free solution to the problem.

Their fabric reinforced thermoset composite material incorporates a unique low-friction surface which, with the addition of solid lubricants, greatly reduces friction coefficient.
