Integrated multiple-axis combinations of actuators for high speed pick and place, particularly of small, delicate parts such as SMT chips and wrist watch parts.

Smac can offer integrated multiple-axis combinations of its actuators in addition to simple linear and linear-rotary devices for high speed pick-and-place operations.

They are available from UK agent Orlin Technologies.

One of the core applications for Smac actuators is high speed pick-and-place, particularly of small, delicate parts such as SMT chips and wristwatch parts.

Low moving mass and low friction, combined with direct drive, give the actuators speed, acceleration, accuracy and repeatability.

Up to 15m/s/s of acceleration is possible and, even at these speeds, the motion profile remains under the close command of the Smac servo controller, meaning gentle stops and starts, not harsh collisions with end stops and limit switches.

Being programmable in force, acceleration, velocity and position, the actuators suit pick-and-place operations.

The softland routine allows the unit to land on a surface with a tightly controlled force down to 1N, without the need to program the height of the surface.

This lets the unit pick and place at any height in the range of the device with no adjustment.

The softland routine also allows the units to handle parts of differing sizes with no change in programming.

The integrated precision linear encoder enables the in-process gauging of parts to sub-micron levels if necessary for quality control.

Reducing the number of contacting parts has resulted in devices with a life of several hundred million cycles.

Being electrically driven, no air supply is needed for the actuators, reducing noise and simplifying integration.

They are available with an integrated vacuum path (with optional filter), break-away shafts and custom tips.

They can also be custom-designed.
