An innovative DC buffer block designed to prevent interruptions in equipment operation, loss of data or other problems resulting from a momentary power loss has just been introduced by Omron.

The S8T-DCBU-02 provides a backup power source or a shutdown time off process for at least 500ms (at 2.5A) to 1s (at 1A) in the event of a glitch or transient interruptions in the supply of power.

Up to four such buffer blocks can be connected in parallel to increase the backup time and current handling capacity.

This buffer block can be used with all of Omron's power supplies, and is one of the most cost-efficient ways of ensuring the supply of power in industrial automation systems.

The S8T-DCBU-02 operates by using built-in capacitors that act as a temporary power source during a power failure.

In addition, the capacitors cause the energy to be artificially boosted to deliver more power and provide a longer backup time than can be expected from a standard backup system.

Once a voltage drop is detected on the power supply to which it is connected, the buffer block's capacitors discharge their energy to the load.

When the power supply recovers, these capacitors start recharging.

Built-in overcurrent and overvoltage protection circuits in the buffer block protect equipment against damage caused by shorts and overloads.

The overcurrent protection circuit activates when an overcurrent is detected, and reduces the output voltage.

The overvoltage protection circuit operates by switching off the output voltage when the input or output voltage values are exceeded.

The buffer block is also protected when the positive and negative I/O terminals are inadvertently connected in reverse.

The S8T-DCBU-02 can be wired to the 24V output of any of Omron's S8VS, S82J, S82K, S8PS and S8PE power supplies.

In addition, it is designed to connect to Omron's S8TS in a simple click-on action via the S8T-BUS03 bus connector.

It provides indicators (ready and backup) for easy status checking, along with alarm outputs.

Easy to install and maintenance-free, the very reliable S8T-DCBU-02 complies with the SEMI F47-0200 standard.
