Omron Corporation, a global leader in automation, sensing and control technologies, has established a development centre in China.

Called the Omron Institute of Sensing and Control Technology (Shanghai) Co, it is located in Zizhu Science Park, Shanghai.

This new centre will be one of the core R and D facilities for Omron.

Mainly organised by local researchers and engineers, it will enable a quick response to local needs and contribute to developing new technologies that will benefit the entire Omron group.

Each year over 100,000 highly educated and experienced exchange students return to China from the USA, Europe and Japan, and a popular destination is the Zizhu Science Park.

Also, it is adjacent to excellent research, educational institutes and Shanghai Jiaotong University, where many talented students study.

One of the main areas of research will be Omron's vision sensing technology that recognises human faces and various objects and shapes.

The investment amounts to US $9.7 million, including real estate, construction of the building and infrastructure.

Initially it will start with approximately 100 participating researchers and engineers, concentrating on about 30 areas.

Omron plans to double both the number of participants and areas of research by the end of fiscal year 2007.
