RT-Range tests driver-assistance systems

At a remote airfield in south Germany, six popular middle-class vehicles have been tested for their capacity to mitigate the effects of potentially dangerous traffic scenarios.
The test equipment was supplied by British-based OxTS, which bases its equipment on GPS-aided inertial navigation technology.
The RT-Range system is ideal for verifying the accuracy of sensors used by driver-assistance systems.
To evaluate the collision-mitigation features in the vehicles' ACC systems, the different cars each followed a target vehicle, driven at a constant speed of 50km/h.
Each of the six cars were then driven towards the target vehicle at speeds of 50km/h, 100km/h and then 130km/h.
The RT-Range system accurately measured the position and speed of the target vehicle and of the following vehicle (hunter).
The measured data of the target vehicle was transmitted to the hunter vehicle over wireless LAN, which then provided the relative speed and distance of the two vehicles.
The collision-avoidance features proved to work well in all six vehicles during the tests.
The tests revealed that these driving aids can avoid a crash at very low speeds and can minimise the damage at higher speeds.
The RT-Range was quick to set up and could be easily transferred between the different vehicles, saving valuable time.
