R and D effort by automotive cooling and drives specialist ebm-papst Automotive and Drives has received the prestigious Product of the Year award at the European Electronics Industry Awards, Elektra 05.

At the gala dinner held at the Grosvenor hotel in London, Managing Director Gareth Jones accepted the award for ebm-papst's ground breaking EC blower from the BBC's Natasha Kaplinsky.

Seeing the need for a device with a significantly longer life, integrated electronics with greater functionality, and with higher efficiency, ebm-papst targeted the EC blower at the automotive industry where it is used as an integral part of the climate control/air conditioning system to cool the condensers and compressors on commercial vehicles.

ebm-papst used its experience of intelligent electronically commutated (EC) technology to develop the blower and succeeded in creating a device that delivers 25,000 hours life compared with 5000 hours from competing products.

An 8dB(A) reduction in noise, a 70W reduction in power consumption and an improvement in efficiency of 6% was also achieved.

The blower has provided ebm-papst with a number of unique selling points, raising the expectation of the marketplace to a higher level and setting the new benchmark.

As a result, by using a system incorporating the EC K3G blower, many fleet operators and A/C system builders now enjoy significantly lower operating costs with a step increase in performance.
