Parker Pneumatic components and hose systems play a major role in the efficient operation of a new dual-purpose Mains Renovation Spray Lining Rig designed and developed by Pipeway Limited of Burgess Hill, West Sussex, for the cleaning and re-lining of underground mains water pipes - while still buried in the ground Pipeway's Mains Renovation Spray Lining Rig consists of a towable four-wheel trailer which houses two heated component storage reservoirs, a two-stage pumping system, trace heating circuit, PDACS (Pipeway Data Acquisition and Control System) electronic control system, umbilical hose and spinner/mixer assemblies
The renovation process starts with the location of the pipe and digging of two, one-metre square holes up to 250 metres apart to expose the pipe.
The pipe inner is accessed by removing a one metre length section of pipe from each excavation.
The pipe inner can then be cleaned by standard mechanical methods.
Once cleaning and pre-lining cctv inspection are complete the lining can be applied.
The machine dispenses a two-pack resin system by centrifugal spray.
This is achieved by warming each resin system component while in the reservoir, which helps to reduce viscosity and aids pumping.
Thermal conditioning of the resin system components takes place inside the umbilical hose.
In operation, the hose is pulled through the pipe and the spray head attached.
The pumps are started and once the on-board monitoring computer shows stable conditions (2-3 minutes), the winch drive is started and the hose is withdrawn from the main.
The lining thickness of 1 mm is obtained by holding the resin system flow constant and varying the linear speed of the spray head via closed loop control.
The resin takes less than 2 minutes to harden.
A post lining cctv survey is then carried out before reconnection and commissioning of the renovated pipe.
Manufactured by Parker Hannifin, the hose was developed by Pipeway specifically for this application.
The hose consists of six inner core hoses (two for resin transfer, one air brake tube for bulk pneumatic feed to the spray head, and three for trace heating), four quad data cable bundles and two capillary nylon tubes encased in a 47 mm OD composite Polyurethane/Aramid sheath.
The combination of inner hose products and sheathing offers good service performance and acceptable abrasion resistance while maintaining the all important flexibility required for the tight operating environment inside a three inch nominal ID water main ã the maximum ID operated is currently 18 inches.
Head loss is one of the disadvantages of pumping high viscosity resin systems through small bore hoses of 250 metres in length.
This is overcome by using reciprocating piston pumps (positive displacement) with 14 inch diameter air motor pistons to get the required mechanical advantage.
Air motors of this size place a huge supply demand on the conditioning equipment, so Pipeway specified one of Parker Pneumatic's recently introduced One Inch FRL (Filter/Regulator/Lubricator) for air preparation.
Other circuits are conditioned by Parker Pneumatic P3E series FRLs.
Parker Pneumatic's One Inch FRL is designed to be removed from an installation without disturbing the plumbing, making maintenance cost-efficient and easy.
This modularity also allows users to stock on one unit and add inexpensive port adapter plates for 3/4 inch, 1 inch or 1 1/2 inch pipes.
The Pipeway rig uses Parker 'Lucifer' solenoid valves to control pneumatic supply to users and for purging/venting of nitrogen screening in the reservoirs.
These valves offer improved performance over conventional designs due to the single cast body having a much larger orifice.
Pipeway is therefore able to use a 3/4 inch valve in place of a conventional one inch solenoid. Request a free brochure from Parker Hannifin ...
