Hydraulic cylinders for sluice gate
refurbishment.

Heavy duty round-line hydraulic cylinders, valves and pumps are at the heart of the new gate control system installationf for an Environment Agency sluice gate refurbishment.

Parker Hannifin heavy duty round-line hydraulic cylinders, valves and pumps are at the heart of the new gate control system installed by FPT (UK) Limited, Engineering Services, at the Pershore Mill Sluice during a refurbishment contract for the Environment Agency Midland Region Pershore Mill is the first of several sluice refurbishment projects to be undertaken in the Environment Agency's Midland Region

Pershore Mill Sluice is situated on the River Avon approximately 23 km from Tewkesbury.

On the far bank is a designated Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) where rare birds such as Marsh Warblers are known to nest.

It is important that the sluice gates maintain a similar opening to avoid cross currents that might scour the river banks.

Similarly, the gate operating system must be reliable so as not to interfere with the navigable reach on the upstream side.

Two vertical lift roller gates were installed in 1974 to control the upstream water level.

The original installation was designed to be automatically operated.

However this proved to be unreliable due to certain control components being insufficiently robust.

The new control system enables the gates to regulate the upstream level during normal periods to within 15.3 to 15.8 mAOD (metres relative to Ordnance Datum Newlyn) minimum.

The gate sill is at level 12.44 mAOD and the top of the gate is at 15.19 mAOD.

The system allows for these levels to be adjusted when necessary, and will facilitate any future upgrading to add remote monitoring and control.

Each gate is directly actuated by a Parker Hannifin type MMB heavy duty round-line cylinder - 125 mm bore and 2500 mm stroke - fitted with an externally mounted cable linear position transducer.

The transducer is robust, accurate, temperature compensated, waterproof to IP67 and provides a 4-20 mA signal.

Hoseburst valves are attached to each cylinder to hold the gate in position in the event of a burst hose.

Parker pilot operated check valves (located in the hydraulic power pack) lock the gates in mid-positions as required.

The gates can be operated singly or together.

When operating together, the gates stop at a common vertical position within +/- 50 mm of each other, one gate acting as a 'master' and the other as 'slave'.

A new 2.2kW hydraulic power pack powers the system which is designed so that the maximum pressure generated by the pumps remains below 210 bar under all service conditions.

Parker Hannifin valves incorporated into the power pack include directional control valves to raise and lower the gates, relief valves to maintain the 210 bar maximum pressure, flow control valves to control the speed of the type MMB cylinders, and relief valves to stop intensification across the cylinders.
