Heavy-duty hydraulics for Cummins press
machine

Twelve Parker Hannifin heavy-duty hydraulic tie-rod cylinders are specified for locking and locating functions on a new semi-automatic cam bush press machine built by West Surrey Engineering

Twelve Parker Hannifin heavy-duty hydraulic tie-rod cylinders are specified for locking and locating functions on a new semi-automatic cam bush press machine built by West Surrey Engineering of Ashford, Middlesex, for installation at the Cummins Engine Company High Horse Power engine manufacturing plant in Daventry, Northamptonshire The machine is the first of its type and is designed to press cam bushes into Cummins KV12, KV16, Quantum 12, Quantum 16 and QSV18 cylinder blocks - functions previously carried out manually and which took six times longer to complete

In operation, a cylinder block is manually loaded via an overhead gantry onto the machine carriage.

The operator ensures that the required mandrels for the KV or Quantum blocks are advanced and correctly orientated and that the mandrel locks - under the control of four Parker Hannifin series 2H heavy-duty hydraulic tie-rod cylinders - are on.

Once correctly located on the carriage, proximity sensors identify which of the five cylinder block types is present and the block clamps - controlled by another four Parker Hannifin 2H hydraulic cylinders - are applied.

The machine then automatically advances the cylinder block to the first position.

The operator inserts a bush into the mandrel which is then automatically pressed by two more Parker Hannifin 2H cylinders into the block.

On completion of this operation, two further Parker Hannifin 2H hydraulic cylinders control the withdrawal of the mandrel to the load position.

This procedure is repeated until all the necessary bushes have been pressed into both the left and right banks of the cylinder block, after which the block clamps are releases for unloading of the cylinder block.

Parker Hannifin's Redhill, Surrey based hydraulics products distributor, South Eastern Hydraulics, built the hydraulic power pack and supplied the cylinders and necessary valve manifolds for the Cummins semi-automatic cam bush press machine.

South Eastern Hydraulics was also responsible for 'piping-up' the hydraulic system on West Surrey Engineering's Ashford production premises.

Parker's Series 2H cylinders are available in bore sizes from 1 1/2 inches to 12 inches and in 17 standard mounting styles.

Any practical stroke length can be supplied and standard operating pressure is up to 210 bar.

Deceleration devices (cushions) can be built in if required.

A number of piston seal options are available, including cast iron piston rings for extreme durability, Lipseal pistons for applications where load holding is critical and Hi-Load pistons which resist side loading and are recommended for long stroke cylinders.
