Parker Hannifin is delivering over $1 million in hydraulics, condition monitoring units, hoses and connectors for the construction phase of the Three Gorges Dam, in China - the country's most impressive endeavour since the Great Wall and the largest engineering project of any kind in the world.

The idea to dam the Yangtze River at the Three Gorges was introduced in 1919 by one of China's first revolutionary leaders, Sun Yat Sen.

Since then, war, revolution and politics have prevented the initiation of the project.

In the mid-1950s research began on the feasibility of a hydroelectric dam at Three Gorges after floods devastated millions along the Yangtze.

The dam is scheduled for completion in 2009.

The $25 billion dam will stand over 180m high, and span more than a mile.

The project will ultimately create 250,000 new jobs, 84.7TWh of electricity per year (as much as 18 nuclear power plants), and allow ocean-going cargo ships and cruise liners to travel 2400km up the Yangtze River to the port city of Chongqing.

The dam will also protect 15 million people living down stream from devastating floods.

When completed, the dam will house 26 of the world's largest hydropower turbines, each one producing 700MW of electricity for supply to Central China, Eastern China, and the Sichuan Province.

By 2003, the first few generators will be up and running, and permanent ship locks powered by Parker will be in use.

The reservoir will fill to 175m above the river's surface and stretch about 640km long when all 26 generators are running.

Parker is also supplying complete drive and control systems for dredging vessels working on the excavation of the Yangtze River to ensure safe navigation.

In the future, Parker will supply hydraulics and instrumentation for the lock controls, and replacement products such as hoses, pumps and cylinders.

Parker was one of the first US industrial companies to establish a joint venture corporation with China in 1981.

The Parker Hubei Seal Corporation was created for the manufacture of O-ring seals and moulded seal shapes.

Today, Parker components can be found on over 30 hydropower stations all over China.
