Staff at the National Coal Mining Museum for England use the portable KarryKrimp hose crimping system to repair broken machinery quickly and simply.

Parker Hannifin, working in partnership with regional distributor Mend-a-Hose Hydraulics, has supplied the National Coal Mining Museum for England with its latest hydraulic hose crimping technology, enabling staff at the museum to prepare hoses when and where they are needed.

By using the portable KarryKrimp hose crimping system, together with a wide range of Parker hose and fittings, the museum's engineers are able to repair broken machinery quickly and simply, optimising the uptime of exhibits and, as a result, safeguarding the museum's reputation and profitability.

The National Coal Mining Museum for England is located at Caphouse Colliery, on the western edge of the Yorkshire coalfield, where mining has been carried out for centuries.

The museum provides visitors with the unique opportunity to travel 140 metres underground down one of Britain 's oldest working mines.

Situated in a rural setting, it offers an unusual combination of exciting experiences, while providing a genuine insight into the hard working lives of miners through the ages.

With a wide variety of mining machinery throughout the museum, maintenance requirements were seen to be high, causing the museum's engineers to review their approach to carrying out repairs on the hydraulic systems of the exhibits.

Keith Neale, Mechanical Engineer at the National Coal Mining Museum for England, explains: "Maximising the uptime of the mining equipment on display is essential to the success of the museum, enabling us to show visitors an accurate representation of the kinds of machines that have been used in the industry over the years".

"Our reliance on ready prepared hydraulic hose meant that we either had to wait for spares to be delivered when a machine was in need of repair, removing the exhibit from public view in the meantime, or use spares of uncertain quality that we already had on site".

"We needed a way to create hose assemblies as required that would be of a quality capable of both optimising uptime and protecting the safety of staff and visitors".

The National Coal Mining Museum approached Mend-a-Hose Hydraulics for a solution, based on the long standing relationship between the two organisations.

Mend-a-Hose was recognised as the Parker UK Distributor of the Year in 2007, as a result of the company's success in promoting its comprehensive range of Parker products and solutions at its ParkerStore in Castleford.

Mend-a-Hose Hydraulics offered the museum a solution in the form of the latest hose crimping technology.

The system, incorporating Parker's portable KarryKrimp hose assembly devices and a selection of hydraulic hose, provided a quick and convenient way to carry out repairs on the hydraulic systems of forklift trucks, underground applications, and other traditional machinery around the museum.

With no need to wait for replacement hose assemblies, maintenance work can now be carried out considerably faster than was previously achievable, putting exhibits back on display as quickly as possible.

Additionally, as the KarryKrimp system is extremely simple to use, minimum operator training is required, allowing staff at various levels to create their own replacement hose, and cutting maintenance costs considerably as a result.

Keith Neale is extremely pleased with the new solution: "Our high expectations have been exceeded by the quality and reliability of the hose crimping system and the excellent service we have received from both Mend-a-Hose and Parker".

"The solution allows us to repair equipment around the museum considerably faster than we were previously able to, and to be confident that the safety of employees and visitors is ensured at all times".

"The system has been so successful that we are now upgrading all the hose used across the museum".
