The Multitronic controller from domnick hunter can significantly improve the energy efficiency of most types of heatless, desiccant compressed air dryer to dramatically cut fuel bills.

Desiccant dryers produce high quality compressed air, however they have high energy consumption due to purge air requirements.

Independent studies show that up to £200 per 100 scfm per year can be saved by controlling the purge rates of dryers.

According to domnick hunter, savings of up to 80% can be achieved by using its Multitronic electronic microprocessor controller.

The compact unit is simply retrofitted to desiccant dryers, replacing the existing controller.

The Multitronic constantly varies the dryer cycle time to maximise efficiency.

Mark Storey, Product Manager at domnick hunter, said: 'Desiccant dryers have twin chambers of desiccant material'.

'While one chamber is drying the other is regenerating, after a pre-set time they change over'.

'The Multitronic detects any remaining drying capacity and lengthens the cycle time to delay changeover so that the desiccant capacity is fully utilised".

'During the extended cycle period, which lasts up to a maximum of 60 minutes rather than the usual 5 minute cycle time, no purge air is consumed for regeneration, which is where the energy savings come from'.

The system constantly monitors dew point, reacting to changes in air usage or shift pattern to provide air of the right quality at the lowest operating cost possible.

The controller also gives plant engineers flexibility to set dew point temperatures at a desired temperature between -25 degree C and -40 degree C, enabling systems to be customised, which can be particularly useful for processes that are prone to change due to advances in technology and fluctuations in demand.

Domnick hunter offers a dew-point dependent switching option on new dryers, which gives similar savings.

The Multitronic, however, is designed for retrofit, which means companies do not need to replace equipment that is still in good working order to gain savings.

This unit has been available for a number of years now, yet it is still a relatively new and unique concept in compressed air dryer technology as many businesses remain unaware of the level of savings that can be achieved through a comparatively small investment in energy saving technology.
