Tyre Zone, a startup company based in Sittingbourne, Kent, offers its customers a service normally reserved for the likes of Formula 1 and the aerospace industry.

Thanks to the use of clever filtration technology, available from Parker Hannifin, it can supply a nitrogen tyre filling service that will offer drivers a raft of driving and environmental benefits.

One look at the importance placed on tyres - and their correct inflation - by the motor racing fraternity pays testament to how important even the slightest improvements are.

Benefits on offer include better mileage figures, enhanced performance, a smoother ride and less need for regular checks.

According to Tyre Zone's Nigel Moore: "It's what's inside that counts".

"Compressed air is roughly 21% oxygen and 79% nitrogen plus some water vapour".

"The reason for tyres losing pressure over time is that the oxygen in the compressed air used to inflate a tyre leaks out through the rubber".

"Therefore, the pressure of the tyre decreases over time leading to all the associated performance losses".

The equipment used by Tyre Zone, called TyreSaver, is supplied by the local Maidstone office of global engineering giant Parker Hannifin.

TyreSaver produces nitrogen from compressed air using Parker's proprietary hollow-fibre membranes.

When compressed air is fed through the hollow fibre membranes, the oxygen and water vapour in the compressed air are separated through what is known as selective permeation, the end product being a stream of nitrogen ready to inflate the tyres.

The benefits of using nitrogen have already been documented in the performance car and aerospace industries.

The Paris Metro is another nitrogen user as are many other transport companies that need the best possible performance from their tyres.

With a potential fuel saving of up to 4% just simply through having the correct inflation pressure, it is obvious to see why this technology has a rosy future the every day car user.
