The TyreSavers are enabling the Volvo Truck Centres to cost effectively offer a fast and efficient tyre filling service, improving the operating life of their customers' tyres and even lowering their fuel consumption in the process.
The Swedish Volvo Truck Centres are sales and service depots for Volvo trucks, incorporating tyre shops where tyres can be filled, bought and changed.
Correct inflation has a significant effect on the life and performance of a tyre.
In particular, inflation pressure largely determines a tyre's load capacity; under-inflation can therefore result in an overloaded tyre, which results in decreased fuel economy, sluggish handling and may result in excessive mechanical flexing and heat build-up leading to catastrophic failure.
Using nitrogen to fill tyres rather than air enables longer term stability of the tyre pressure to be maintained due to slower leakage, while offering better grip and handling.
It can also result in reduced fuel consumption, longer tyre life, enhanced safety, and the elimination of oxidation within the tyre which can lead to compromised strength and elasticity of the rubber.
Jan Willander, Aftermarket Manager of Volvo Truck Centres, explained: "We required a high performance product that could offer us a fast and efficient means of filling truck tyres with nitrogen".
"A number of solutions that were presented to us were either not of a high enough quality or just not cost effective; Parker offered us a good combination of performance and price".
The TruckTyreSaver is based on Parker's hollow fibre membrane technology, which makes it possible to separate a compressed air feed into nitrogen and an oxygen enriched air stream which permeates through the fibre walls.
The Parker fibres are more efficient than competing materials allowing the diameter of the fibre to be increased, and ultimately resulting in purer nitrogen.
The system is capable of filling up to 35 large vehicle tyres per hour.
The installation has virtually no moving parts, resulting in reliable, trouble-free operation with virtually no maintenance.
It can either be connected to an external nitrogen storage vessel or directly to the filling piston, and will automatically switch on and off depending on the nitrogen demand.
The TruckTyreSaver is the most compact truck tyre filling unit available and is quick and easy to install, with an integrated high quality compressed air treatment unit.
Alternatively air can be sourced from a dedicated compressor; the Parker generator can achieve competitive results with significantly less air consumption than other methods of nitrogen separation, eliminating the need for expensive compressor upgrades or heaters, lowering operating costs and increasing system reliability.
One of the Parker generators has already been installed at the Volvo Truck Centre in Stockholm, with another three installations imminent.
