Within hours of the opening of CIM 2000 exhibition at the NEC in Birmingham, Nylacast, an exhibitor at Manufacturing Week 2000, used the opportunity to see a final demonstration of EdgeCAM off-line programming software on the Pathtrace stand and promptly placed an order Leicester-based Nylacast has been using EdgeCAM for over three years to program its CNC machine tools

A major development in the Edgecam portfolio is the launch of 'Solid Machinist' which will enable uses to directly machine Parasolid models inside the off-line programming software.
Edgecam chosen for high performance transmission
Faced with an ever-increasing demand for more complex machined surfaces, motor sports supplier, Hewland Engineering, has invested in Pathtrace's Edgecam system.
Phil Dixon Sales Project Engineer explains how the company is now planning to double capacity of nylon-based component production and reduce lead times from typically two weeks to under a week.
"The expansion of our CNC programming is part of our intention to integrate our in-house AutoCAD and other solid modelling systems through to DNC.
We will also introduce an EdgeCAM COM remote communications package which will be critical in achieving our productivity objectives," he said.
Nylacast employs more than 250 people, has four sites in Leicester and further operations in the US, Poland and South Africa.
At Leicester, a further six vertical machining centres have recently been installed with Heidenhain TNC 426 controls to stand alongside 50 existing machine tools.
Andy Wilkins, off-machine programmer maintains: "We have to accommodate new and older controls and here EdgeCAM's Code Wizard makes configuring code generators so simple.
Also, the on-screen verification of EdgeCAM means we catch most potential program problems before they hit the shopfloor." Although Nylacast is very satisfied with EdgeCAM it was decided to compare it against the latest advances of other systems.
But, maintains Phil Dixon: "You need to consider continuity and proven machining strategies and, as with our original decision to buy EdgeCAM, we found other systems were still not as good." To which Andy Wilkins adds: "Because EdgeCAM is Pathtrace's own product they have a total understanding and can advise and even change elements in the software to solve particular problems.
We do not believe this could be achieved by a distributor or reseller.".
