PCB unveils range of MEMS shock accelerometers

A PCB Piezotronics product story
Edited by the Engineeringtalk editorial team Jun 30, 2009

PCB Piezotronics has introduced its Series 3991/3501 MEMS shock accelerometers.

The miniature, high-amplitude, DC response acceleration sensors are capable of measuring long-duration transient motion, as well as responding to and surviving extremely fast rise times typical of high G-shock events.

Offered in packaged and OEM configurations, these sensors are able to fulfil a variety of installation requirements.

The design concepts were born from PCB's expertise in very high G-shock (more than 20,000G) measurement applications and sensor development.

The air-damped acceleration sensing element, which is micro-machined from silicon, is manufactured with the latest advances in etching techniques and equipment.

Measuring 2.5mm x 1.7mm x 0.9mm, the sensor incorporates a seismic mass, protective-over-range stops and a fully active piezoresistive Wheatstone bridge.

The slight air damping reduces the resonant amplification, which increases measurement accuracy.

The over-range stops give the sensor exceptional survivability, according to the company.

This sensor is suitable for a number of applications, including: safe and arm; smart fuses; penetrator tests; weapons data recorders/launch characteristics; metal-to metal impact/armour piercing; the blast loading of structures; drop testing; pile driving; jack hammer testing; down hole drilling; and shot counting.

PCB is offering a 50 per cent trade up discount for any competitor's shock accelerometer or a 25 per cent trade-up discount for any PCB shock accelerometer on select models.
