Safe and effortless removal of vehicle windscreens

A PDD product story

A remarkable new technology developed by Belron International and product innovation consultants PDD provides a safe and effortless removal of vehicle windscreens

Belron International, owner of Autoglass, Carglass and other leading players in automotive windscreen replacement, and PDD Ltd, one of Europe's leading Product Innovation Consultants, announce a remarkable new technology that provides a safe and effortless removal of vehicle windscreens.

Today's windscreens form part of the structural strength of a vehicle and the modern adhesives used to secure them make removal difficult.

Considerable physical strength is required to cut out windscreens and to date no one has found a safe and efficient removal method.

Ever tighter manufacturing tolerances and tougher health and safety and environmental regulations are increasing the challenge.

Belron International's development company, AGSI, has been working on these problems in a £2m high tech research programme with the University of Swansea.

An evaluation by PDD now shows that it has succeeded in inventing a system that both addresses the safety issues and offers the prospect of improved commercial returns.

After considering lasers and ultra sound early in the development phase, innovative flash guns have now been developed to deliver and focus massive amounts of light energy.

Clean de-bonding of the glass from the adhesive is reliably achieved.

The physical effort of cutting is eliminated, with the risks of injuries and vehicle damage greatly reduced.

Patents have been granted for this innovative application.

Although new to the windscreen replacement industry, Flashlight has already satisfied the safety requirements for use in cosmetic health care.

Belron recently commissioned a batch of 30 prototype tools, and has completed an extensive evaluation program in its companies throughout Europe.

Drawing on these findings, PDD has developed a production concept for a mobile version of the tool, intended to be offered on the world market.
