FCx Pegler and Louden valves and flow control solutions have been chosen for training airport fire fighters for their worst-case scenario - a burning aircraft.

The valves products are being used by Simulation - one of the world's leading exponents in the design and creation of fire training rigs for use by fire crews of airports.

The company builds its rigs to look like medium-sized aircraft and has completed projects for Birmingham International Airport, East Midlands Airport and Bournemouth Airport.

A Simulation unit has also been established for the Ministry of Defence at a facility at Manston in Kent.

As the MoD's largest training rig, it includes Tristar airliner, Tornado jet fighter, Sea King helicopter and Hercules transport plane-based features.

Simulation rigs use LPG to generate their fires and can create internal or external fires on which fire fighters can practice and hone their skills.

With it, an inferno can be generated and shut down in seconds.

The LPG vaporizes at the nozzles and provides intense heat greater than 1,000 degrees centigrade almost instantly.

The choice of valves for a Simulation training rig is critical and for the rig at Birmingham International Airport, Simulation opted for flow control solutions from Pegler and Louden FCx.

Pegler and Louden's Peter Hesketh commented: "It was essential in creating the rig that the LPG valve box was close to the fires and that the valves could be switched off instantly.

The flow control package also had to be robust and reliable and for this, Simulation opted for Habonim Ball valves and Compact Actuators as 3/4 inch and 1 inch actuated packages and a 11/4 inch manual valve.

Despite the searing heat generated during a fire exercise, the rig can be ready for another exercise in a matter of minutes.

That sort of process demands incredible performance and reliability." Pegler and Louden FCx is one of the UK's leading suppliers of flow control solutions and products.

It is active in a huge variety of industries where high quality flow control is essential.

These industries include chemical manufacture, paper and pulp, offshore, pharmaceutical and the nuclear industry.
