Rocker switch used in theatre scenery
system

AVW Controls has recently developed Impressario, a computerised system for moving theatre scenery, and has incorporated a Penny and Giles JC030 single-axis rocker switch in the control console

AVW Controls Ltd, based near Diss in Norfolk, is a manufacturer of integrated motion control systems for the entertainment industry The company works mainly in theatre but is also involved in rigging and scenery control for concerts, TV and film

The company has recently developed 'Impressario', a computerised system for moving theatre scenery; and has incorporated a Penny and Giles JC030 single-axis rocker switch in the control console to provide a manual speed override for pre-programmed scene changes.

Impressario, which can record up to 500 cues, is an integrated motion control system featuring a computer control console and purpose designed motion processor modules.

The control console communicates on a high-speed data network with up to 255 motion processors.

Each processor is interfaced to a servo amplifier or motor controller that responds to commands from the Impressario console.

Says Anton Woodward of AVW: "Impressario allows theatre directors to pre-programme individual scenery bars with the movement and positions needed for every scene change - ensuring that everything happens on cue." But as Anton explains, the JC030 is fitted because things don't always happen on cue! "If an actor is late on stage or if the cast misses a few lines, the scene changes themselves need to be changed! The JC030 allows the operator the intervene and speed things up, providing a seamless change that the audience doesn't notice." Commenting on the choice of a rocker switch Anton says they have used Penny and Giles equipment on a number of projects and asked them to suggest an ergonomic speed controller that would complement the design of the console.

Among the first applications for Impressario are two export orders despatched to Thessalonika in Greece - one to control 54 scenery bars in a new concert hall, and the other for the Royal Theatre to control 13 scenery bars and the stage curtains. Request a free brochure from Penny + Giles ...
