Sleeve protects linear positioning sensors

A new anodised aluminium protective sleeve is now available for the SLS series of linear positioning sensors.
Penny and Giles is working with customers in the motorsport and truck sectors to achieve high performance position monitoring in very harsh applications.
Developed to meet the needs of the Kawaski Superbike racing team and for refuse truck applications for the McNeilus division of Oshkosh Truck Corp in the USA, a new anodised aluminium protective sleeve is now available for the SLS series of linear positioning sensors.
The SLS range of sealed linear sensors is based on proven hybrid track technology.
Designed for use in harsh environments, SLS sensors are sealed to IP66 against ingress of dust and dirt.
And although this is adequate protection for most industrial applications, it does not account for the effects of large particles of dirt and debris being thrown up from the road (in the case of the motorbikes), or falling out of dustbins (in the case of McNeilus), and the risk of damage to the sensor shaft, and in turn the IP seal, that this can cause.
Penny and Giles Sales Manager Cliff Durling explains: "The IP66 specification is for a 'static controlled environment'.
That is why some of these particularly harsh outdoor applications - which are anything but static or controlled - often have difficulty finding sensors robust enough to do the job.
By working closely with Kawasaki and McNeilus to understand their applications and what it is they need to achieve, we were able to develop a solution in the form of the new protective sleeve".
The new Penny and Giles sleeve is an option available for linear position sensors in the SLS range, from the slim body 25-200mm stroke SLS130, to the SLS320 which has a stroke length up to 1100mm.
Made of anodised aluminium, the sleeve fits neatly over the sensor to provide complete protection from damage by any foreign bodies.
Kawasaki Superbikes and 600cc SuperSport bikes are all equipped with short SLS130 sealed linear sensors to provide position monitoring on front and rear suspension.
According to the Kawasaki team, the SLS130 fitted with the protective sleeve option has withstood multiple race use in all weather conditions.
This is in direct contrast to similar, often more expensive products they have tried which have failed repeatedly under these conditions.
McNeilus FrontLoader and AutoReach refuse trucks are fitted with the longer sensors in the range, SLS320, also with protective sleeves.
The sensors are located on the lifting systems of both trucks and form part of the closed-loop system which is programmed to control the automatic lifting and emptying of the dustbins (dumpsters).
Cliff Durling again: "The sleeve has proved so successful in these two applications that we are already recommending it to other customers for agricultural, material handling, construction, steel works, structural monitoring and other particularly harsh applications".
