A new range of power factor correction capacitors have been unveiled by PFC Engineering that provide high overload capacity, long life expectancy and safe reaction at overload.

The capacitors have a very high current load capacity.

This is far more important that the voltage load capacity, since it is the current load that is most affected by dirty supplies.

For instance, in networks polluted by harmonics, over voltages are common and in particular a higher RMS current load when resonances occur.

If, say, 7% of the 11th harmonic occurs, then the voltage increase is 7%.

The actual value of the capacitor current however, is 1.33 times the rated current in this instance.

At 400VAC PFC recommends capacitors rated at 440VAC.

Then the permissible current load capacity is twice the rated current at 400VAC/50Hz permanently and up to 350 times the rated current during short peak currents.

Voltage overload is in accordance with the BDE 0560 part 41 standard.

The metallised polypropylene foil that forms the dielectric is self-healing in the event of voltage overload.

The capacitors have exceptional power density - for example, 15kVar reactive power is housed in just 1000cm2.

This is achieved by having a high utilisation of the dielectric coupled with a very low loss factor.

To gain the very high life expectancy in the devices, a flame inhibiting mineral filler is used.

This effectively enables partial discharges (the negligible electrical discharges made inside the dielectric) to be suppressed.

The materials used are of high purity and field tests of these materials over the past 10 years suggest a failure rate of less than 1% in 15 years of operation.

The PFC capacitors are very safe.

There is an overload facility as standard, that activates at internal overpressure to disconnect the capacitor from the mains.

Essentially the cover plate of the device is raised, causing the rupturing of the internal connecting wires to the coil.

The range covers from 3.33kW at 230VAC/50Hz up to 13.4kW at 610VAC/60Hz.

Most sizes are available immediately from PFC Engineering from stock.
