A new range of power factor correction capacitors have been unveiled by PFC Engineering that provide high overload capacity, long life expectancy, safe reaction at overload and a range of other benefits.

As a major provider of power factor correction systems for many years, PFC has invested considerably in researching and testing capacitors from all over the world for its own use.

This latest range of products has been identified as the best available and has been made available by the company in the UK for general use.

The capacitors elements, designated LKT, are available up to 30kVar/440volt and are of the dry type, so there is no possibility of leakage, and they can be mounted in any plane.

They have a very high current load capacity.

This is far more important than the voltage load capacity, since it is the current load that is most affected by dirty supplies.

For instance, in networks polluted by harmonics, a higher RMS current load occurs.

At 400VAC, PFC LKT capacitors have a permissible current load capacity of twice the rated current permanently and up to 350 times the rated current during short peaks.

Voltage overload is in accordance with the VDE 0560 part 41, EN60831-1 and -2, and IEC 831-1 and -2 standards.

The metallised polypropylene foil that forms the dielectric is self-healing in the event of overload.

The capacitors have exceptional power density, with 30kVar reactive power housed in a compact 85mm diameter x 355mm high cylinder, including the connecting terminal.

This is achieved by having a high utilisation of the dielectric, coupled with a very low loss factor.

To gain the very high life expectancy in the devices, a flame inhibiting mineral filler is used.

This effectively enables partial discharges (the negligible electrical discharges made inside the dielectric) to be suppressed.

The materials used are of high purity and field tests of these materials suggest a failure rate of less than 1% in 15 years of operation.

The PFC capacitors are very safe, with an overload facility provided as standard which activates at internal overpressure to disconnect the capacitor from the mains.

Essentially the cover plate of the device is raised, causing the rupturing of the internal connecting wires to the coil.

Touch free terminals also provide for an IP2X rating.

Fitting is facilitated by using push and click spring clamp terminals.
