Profil UK will highlight the cost and productivity benefits of pierce fastener technology with the UK launch of its high-performance earthing stud on Stand 3041 at MACH 2004 The new two-piece fastener provides a fast and reliable method of mounting high strength, watertight component or subsystem earthing points in sheet metal panels up to 1.35mm thick, making it an ideal choice for vehicle assembly and domestic appliance applications
Based on Profil's established SBF stud range, the new earthing point fastener offers substantial piece part cost and installation speed advantages over competitive products, such as riveted studs, threaded pegs, captive nuts or welded anchors.
It is equally effective with steel, aluminium, plated, or sandwich steel panels and features a self-piercing action that ensures retention of the base material slug after setting.
The fastener is normally installed prior to painting operations and incorporates a tapered body section that ensures maximum metal-to-metal contact; while the stud's six antirotation ribs provide additional assembly integrity and torque resistance.
Profil's new M6 earthing stud is supplied with a special purpose nut that is pre-assembled to 9Nm - the prevailing torque employed throughout the automotive sector.
Its design prevents the ingress of industry-standard E coat or paint finishes prior to final assembly, yet guarantees a large flat area of contact between the nut and shoulder of the stud.
Once installed, the stud provides a nominal 3.5mm standoff from the base panel, eliminating the risk of unwanted electrical contact with the finished surface.
The fastener is produced in mild steel with a trivalent zinc passivated finish, and is available in two lengths for single or multiple earthing applications.
Profil's presentation of advanced assembly solutions for sheet metal applications at MACH will also include examples of pierce nuts and studs in standard and large flange configurations for applications in materials up to 6.0mm thick.
Product variants include shouldered, conical, ultra-low-profile, high shear, flush fitting and restricted access types - as well as nyloc insert versions - to suit individual customer needs.
All are available with M6-M12 threads, in a selection of materials, for installation in coated or uncoated materials, high grade, stainless and sandwich steels, as well as aluminium sections or even magnesium castings.
Also on display will be an example of Profil's high speed feeding and insertion equipment, which enables more than 100 fasteners to be installed per minute - at least an order of magnitude faster than riveted or welded alternatives.
The ability to achieve vibration resistant fixings with high static, dynamic and impact load capabilities will be demonstrated by the company's display of applications on BMW's new Mini, the A class Mercedes and next generation Land-Rover Discovery, which alone employs more than 300 Profil fasteners in its construction - throughout wet, under bonnet, interior and safety-critical areas of the vehicle.
A further display of general automotive and domestic appliance applications will highlight Profil's pierce fastening technology in action at other high profile customers, including Dyson, Jaguar, VW-Audi, Rover and Peugeot. Request a free brochure from Profil UK ...
