Profil fastening systems take the stand

A Profil UK product story
Edited by the Engineeringtalk editorial team Oct 2, 2008

The latest additions to Profil UK's range of pierce and rivet fastening systems will form part of a presentation of advanced sheet metal assembly technology.

The presentation takes place at the Fastening Solutions Show at the National Motorcycle Museum on 23rd October.

Profil's display of mechanical fastening systems will focus on the ability to install high strength, male or female threads in components up to 4.0mm thick.

Its range includes pierce nuts and studs in standard and large flange configurations, as well as shouldered, conical, ultra low-profile, high shear, flush fitting and restricted access types.

All are available with M6-M12 threads in a variety of materials, for installation in coated or uncoated materials, high tensile, stainless and sandwich steels, aluminium sections and even magnesium castings.

Latest Profil applications on show will include the provision of high-strength anchorage points in modular buildings and a series of new installations in vehicles across the MINI Clubman, Saloon and Cabriolet ranges; next generation Audi A4 and A5 vehicles; and Land-Rover Discovery, Freelander and Range-Rover Sports models.

Collectively, these vehicles employ more than 1,000 Profil fasteners in their construction - in areas ranging from wing mirror retention to safety-critical engine, gearbox and subframe mountings.

New products to be featured by Profil will include the recently introduced NBR threaded stud, which incorporates a shouldered profile for accurate component positioning and a generous thread lead-in for use with high-speed nut-running equipment.

The fastener enables secure, watertight fixings to be achieved in a wide variety of materials, with an absolute positional accuracy of +0.2mm.

NBR studs are also particularly suitable for dynamic, static and shock load applications and feature a large flange head for exceptional pull through performance.

A series of special-purpose fasteners will also be displayed, including Profil's self-piercing RSR electrical earthing nut, SBF ball pin stud and multi-functional RSN 'top hat' nut.

Featuring a skirted design that ensures watertight sealing and maximum metal-to-metal contact, RSR nuts provide high strength location and consistent component earthing in sheet-metal assemblies up to 2.00mm thick.

Electrical conductivity is further enhanced by the fastener's large, flat area of contact and the attachment of terminations using self tapping bolts or screws.

The new nut also offers substantial piece part cost and installation speed advantages over competitive products such as riveted studs, threaded pegs, captive nuts or welded anchors - to provide an ideal solution for vehicle assembly, electrical equipment and domestic appliance applications.

The product's cross section accommodates purpose-designed slip-on plastic cages with four terminal locations.

In addition, the fastener's body ensures a 7.00mm stand-off from the base panel, eliminating the risk of unwanted electrical contact or damage to finished surfaces.

Profil's SBF ball pin studs provide a fast and cost-effective method of achieving high-strength pivot points in sheet metal components from 0.8-2.0mm thick.

They feature a cold-forged 10mm diameter head that is compatible with industry-standard gas springs, making them equally applicable for domestic appliance or vehicle tailgate and bonnet use.

RSN 'top hat' nuts have been designed specifically to produce reliable, watertight mountings for vehicle after-market roof racks - along with significant build-quality benefits and cost savings of up to USD0.50 per car.

Similarly, fasteners in Profil's latest corrosion-resistant 'Magni' finish, capable of enduring more than 1,000 hours of salt spray without rusting, will be showcased at the exhibition - demonstrating the system's suitability for even the most aggressive operating environments.

Feeding and insertion equipment for installing more than 100 fasteners per minute - at least an order of magnitude faster than riveted or welded methods - will also be highlighted on Profil's stand.
