Shuyan Ji is an engineering graduate of Beijing University, China and also has a PhD in Product Design from Nottingham Trent University where she specialised in web-based collaborative environments for integrated product design.
Her work for the Telford-based Polymer Cluster, part of the Wolverhampton Telford Technology Corridor (WTTC) has to date involved product substitutions (from wood to plastics), making prototypes using stereolithography; building 3D models and 2D drawings using CAD software; and conducting product feasibility studies from an engineering point of view.
Shuyan Ji has enjoyed helping her client companies with her know-how and skills.
"Many companies suffer through lack of expertise and knowledge and do not always make full use of their people by converting known science and innovative ideas into explicit knowledge and new product designs" she says.
"We can help companies realise their dreams of product innovation by thoroughly testing them against technical and scientific criteria".
Polymer Cluster clients - small to medium sized companies in qualifying areas in the West Midlands - receive a fully integrated service package that ranges from market analysis and need specifications through to technology-led design and advanced manufacturing methods.
Polymer Cluster Champion Paul Hackney says that "Shuyan Ji's appointment is good news for us and for the IPDC".
"Most of all, however, it is good news for the hundreds of Midlands-based manufacturers that stand in need of expertise such as this".
"I encourage all of those companies with good designs and good ideas to get in touch with us at the Cluster to see whether we can help take their projects forward".
The Polymer Cluster is funded by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and is housed within the University of Wolverhampton on its Telford campus.
