Parker Hannifin's Electromechanical Division has launched a new plug-in power module for its renowned range of DIN rail mounting stepper drives that facilitates direct-on-line operation from standard single-phase AC mains supplies The new P25L power module can supply up to three Parker L series stepper drives - it has a continuous power rating of 250W - and operates from any voltage in the range 94 to 264VAC, enabling it to be used virtually anywhere in the world
Configuring a ready-to-run multi-axis motion control system for a particular application simply involves selecting the appropriate power, drive and control options, and plugging the modules into DIN rail mounting docking stations.
Specifically developed to address the key issues of installation time and cost, Parker's DIN rail mounting stepper drive system was the first motion control system to use stackable docking stations that directly mount on a standard DIN rail.
Since its launch, the system has acquired a considerable industry reputation for control flexibility and performance, and it is now the system of choice for many electrical panel and cabinet builders.
The system's stepper drive modules are available with a choice of four power ratings to enable users to exactly match the requirements of their application; there are two 75V drives, with current ratings of 2.5A and 5A, and two 170V drives, with current ratings of 8A and 12A.
The high voltage drives are used in conjunction with a 600W or 2kW DIN rail mounting power supply, but until now, the only power supply options available for low-voltage drive systems involved a separate isolating transformer or external DC supply.
The new P25L power module puts an end to this compromise, allowing complete, self-contained single- or multi-axis motion control systems to be implemented extremely efficiently.
All Parker DIN rail mounting stepper drive modules offer programmable motor current, automatic current reduction at standby, and a current boost facility to improve acceleration performance.
The drives are suitable for use with any standard 2-phase stepper motor, and offer a choice of four resolution settings from 400 to 4000 steps/rev for control optimisation.
Each of the four drive modules is available as a basic unit with step-direction inputs, or as an intelligent unit fitted with a powerful indexer.
The indexer versions offer RS232 and RS485 serial communications as standard, and can also be fitted with an optional CANbus interface.
Parker has expended considerable effort in making the indexer very easy to program, with the result that many programming operations can be carried out very efficiently, using just a few commands.
For example, pre-defined move profiles can be stored and then executed in response to a single program command or external event, which minimises programming effort and facilitates fast-response control.
The intelligent drives are supplied complete with Parker's EASI-Tools software, which enables users to fully configure the drive and to create, edit and save motion control programs on a standard PC running Windows 95, 98 or NT4.
All of Parker's DIN rail mounting stepper drive system components are CE marked to indicate compliance with the Low Voltage Directive, and are also UL recognised.
