Power module supplies six stepper drives

This wide input range enables OEMs to build complete multi-axis motion control systems that can be powered from standard single-phase AC mains supplies virtually anywhere in the world.
The XLPSU module provides both the main 80VDC supply bus for the drives, and their 24VDC logic supply.
Housed in a slim, 50mm-wide metal case, the XLPSU module has a height of 175mm and a depth of 130mm - exactly the same as XL series drives.
The module is designed for panel-mounting and uses screw terminals for ease of connection.
The main 80VDC output can deliver a continuous current of 3.1A (7.5A peak) when supplied with a nominal 230VAC input, de-rated to 2.6A continuous if the 24VDC auxiliary output is used to its maximum 1.8A capacity.
This output capability provides sufficient power for up to six XL series drives, provided that the total continuous demand does not exceed 250W.
At full load, the module presents a power factor of better than 0.9.
Targeted specifically at the cost-critical OEM market, Parker's XL series products combine latest-generation technology with inexpensive packaging techniques, and are expressly designed for long-term reliability.
The XLPSU module embodies the same philosophy; it is extensively protected against short-circuits, overloads and over-temperature conditions - automatically shutting down in the event of a fault - and contains a high-value capacitor to guard against the effects of supply brown-out.
It also features an internal dump switch with a peak rating of 810W, enabling power regenerated during deceleration to be dissipated by an external dump resistor.
The drives in Parker's XL series are available with 2.5A or 5A output stages to facilitate application matching, and are suitable for use with any standard 2-phase stepper motor; they offer four user-selectable resolution settings to simplify control optimisation.
Standard features include programmable motor current and automatic current reduction at standby.
The drives can be supplied as basic units with step-direction inputs, or as intelligent units incorporating an exceptionally powerful indexer.
The indexer version offers RS232 serial communications as standard, and can be fitted with an optional CANbus interface.
It offers eight user-programmable I/O ports, which are designed for robustness and use 24V levels throughout, ensuring a high degree of noise immunity and compatibility with virtually all PLCs on the market.
Parker has expended considerable effort in making the indexer easy to program, with the result that many programming operations can be carried out very efficiently, using just a few commands.
For example, pre-defined move profiles can be stored and then executed in response to a single program command or external event, which minimises programming effort and simplifies the implementation of fast-response control systems.
The intelligent drives are shipped complete with Parker's EASI-Tools software, which enables users to fully configure the drive and to create, edit and save motion control programs on a standard PC running Windows 95/98, 2000 or NT4.
