Actuators and cylinders show their versatility

A Parker Hannifin - Electromechanical and Drives Division product story

PowerRod actuators and cylinders combine versatility with high velocity, acceleration, accuracy and repeatability.

Claimed to offer a more versatile alternative to pneumatics, Parker Hannifin's new PowerRod actuators and cylinders combine this versatility with high velocity, acceleration, accuracy and repeatability - an impressive array of features that will satisfy the needs of many demanding automation applications - especially when their cost effectiveness is also factored into the equation.

With a patented design, comprising an IP67-rated forcer, stainless steel thrust rod and powerful rare-earth magnets, PowerRod products offer a continuous force range of 51 to 102N - with peak forces up to an impressive 780N.

Notwithstanding these high forces, repeatability is an impressive 6um, and accuracy from the integral noncontact position sensor is 250um.

Possessing the inherent reliability of a linear motor, PowerRod products are virtually maintenance free and because their method of operation is essentially "noncontact", they suffer no wear - retaining their precision over their full lifetime.

The internal dry bearing also ensures quiet performance Their clever design also caters for high duty cycles without the need for forced air or water cooling, as the tubular motor uniformly radiates heat thanks to its superior thermal efficiency.

The mechanical arrangement ensures easy installation and, in combination with servo controllers from Parker's Compax3 range, they are easily integrated into existing drive solutions.

Two models are offered - the PowerRod Actuator (PRA) and the PowerRod Cylinder (PRC) with the actuator exhibiting a "through" design in which the thrust rod projects from both ends.

Each can be supplied in four variants and the thrust rods are available for travel lengths up to 1200 and 309mm for the PRA and the PRC, respectively, with the PRA offering additional travel lengths up to 2000mm on request.

Because the thrust rod is mounted at both ends, similar to a ballscrew, the PRA is ideal for pick and place and general machines.

The PRC offers an optimum package for industrial automation systems where a multitude of different positions must be addressed, such as material handling, packaging and automated assembly.
