Electronic training speeds CAD learning in Florida

A ProSoft product story
Edited by the Engineeringtalk editorial team May 21, 2004

ProSoft is to develop an interactive, web-based electronic training module for a custom software application known as Sheet Navigator, used and distributed by the Florida Department of Transportation.

ProSoft, working as a sub-contractor on one of Florida Department of Transportation's (DOT) professional services contracts, will develop an interactive, web-based electronic training module for a custom software application known as Sheet Navigator, used and distributed by the DOT.

ProSoft will use its popular custom electronic courseware player, combining synchronised animations and voice with professionally developed training material in a menu-driven interface, offering users an extremely flexible and effective way to learn the software at their own pace.

In agreement with the DOT, the courseware will be hosted at ProSoft's San Antonio-based Electronic Courseware Deployment Centre, and made available, free of charge, to Florida DOT employees and consultants working on DOT projects.

Sheet Navigator is a custom application originally developed for the DOT by Rowse Company before its merger with ProSoft in 2003.

Florida DOT is continuing to develop Sheet Navigator and recently added several enhancements, including support for MicroStation V8.

Sheet Navigator provides several key functions.

It Automatically creates sheet title block information through a dialog interface.

It automatically renumbers sheets as drawings are added or removed from a sheet set.

It opens sheet files quickly when chosen from an index of sheet files within a project.

Garrett Galbreath, who manages electronic courseware development at ProSoft, commented: "Sheet Navigator is built specifically for Florida DOT sheet files, although the application could easily be adapted to other standards".

"The animated tutorial that ProSoft is developing for the DOT will instruct internal users and consultants in the configuration, settings, and usage of the application".

"Sheet Navigator is a key component in the CAD software suite provided by the DOT".

Florida DOT is also a subscriber of ProSoft's MicroStation Fundamentals Online Edition electronic training courseware for MicroStation/J and V8, and a long-time user of SiteMenu, one of ProSoft's primary CAD standards management solutions.

Internally, Florida DOT pools approximately 800 MicroStation licenses, many of which are used with Geopak and a number of other specialised civil design software applications.

The DOT has distributed approximately 800 copies of Sheet Navigator and SiteMenu, as part of its CADD software suite, to its engineering consultant partners, and public libraries, schools and universities which have shown an interest in making the DOT CADD software available.
