Advanced kit provides full automotive diagnostics

A Pico Technology product story
Edited by the Engineeringtalk editorial team Feb 14, 2003

Pico Technology has launched an advanced version of its award-winning automotive diagnostics kit.

Pico Technology has launched an advanced version of its award-winning automotive diagnostics kit.

This version includes all that the entry-level version (launched June 2002) does, but adds a 60A DC current clamp, acupuncture probes, an additional secondary ignition probe and a 'cigar lighter' power lead for on-the-road use.

The additional components within the advanced kit enable users to test virtually all the electrical and electronic components and circuits in a vehicle including: ignition (primary and secondary); injectors and fuel pumps; starter and charging circuits; ABS, crank, cam, lambda (oxygen) and airflow sensors; and glow plugs (for diesels) and timer relays.

Alan Tong, Pico Technology's Technical Director comments: "The advanced version of our automotive diagnostics kit gives automobile technicians and engineers the ability to test virtually every electronic/electrical component found on a vehicle.

And the addition of the acupuncture probes means that users now have access to signals within sealed connectors".

At the heart of the automotive diagnostics kit (entry-level and advanced versions) is the PicoScope software and information suite, which features a drop-down menu of common automotive tests.

In addition, the software can be customised and, via Internet access or CD ROM, can make full use of Pico's growing range of automotive test waveforms - made freely available at www.picotech.com/auto.

Pico's automotive diagnostics kits (entry-level and advanced) are ideal for OEMs, franchised and non-franchised garages, breakdown/roadside recovery organisations and those providing mobile tuning/repair services.

Costing a fraction of traditional automotive oscilloscopes and engine analysers, both kits feature Pico's popular ADC-212/3 oscilloscope which, when used with (free) PicoScope software, converts a desktop or laptop computer into an oscilloscope, spectrum analyser and meter at the same time.

Tong concludes: "The test kit is everything you need to measure and record the majority of the signals, currents and voltages responsible for whether a vehicle is functioning or not.

And with the ability to download traces and settings from the web into PicoScope, technicians can compare like for like".

Both 'good' and 'bad' waveforms are present within the library, as good traces alone cannot convey what may be wrong with a vehicle when a technician is unable to capture a similar trace.

With access to 'bad' waveforms it is easier to draw conclusions as to which components are at fault.

The Advanced Version of the Automotive Diagnostics Kit is available immediately, and retails for GBP 749.00 plus VAT.
