Pilz Safe Automation has won approval by highly regarded European certification organisation TUV for its management of key electrical safety system standard, IEC 61508.

Pilz Safe Automation has won approval by highly regarded European certification organisation TUV for its management of key electrical safety system standard, IEC 61508 Awarded in November 2005, the TUV certification accredits Pilz's safety management system, and the company itself as an inspection body, in accordance with IEC 61508 - the international standard for Functional safety of electrical, electronic and programmable electronic safety-related systems

TUV had already approved several types of Pilz automation safety equipment to IEC 61508 SIL3, including the Programmable Safety System (PSS), or safety PLC, and PNOZmulti safety controller.

Taking in Pilz's operations in 14 countries, including Australia, the corporate TUV accreditation applies to the overall operation of the safety systems, their maintenance and retrofitting.

Pilz Safe Automation's Australian managing director, Frank Schrever, says the TUV accreditation was important to local engineers dealing with Australian Standard AS 61508, which mirrors the IEC standard.

"61508 is a complex standard and most Australian engineers are still struggling to come to grips with it," Mr Schrever says.

"The feedback from our research is that they want an expert they can trust to explain what needs to be done in order to comply and then provide the solutions.

"We are very pleased that TUV has endorsed Pilz to fill that role".
