For some time customers have had the option to specify plug-in terminals for Pilz safety relays, but now the plug-in style is to become the standard offering for many of the products.
Plug-in terminals can result in simplified wiring, as well as easier and faster replacement of components with a reduced risk of incorrect rewiring thanks to preterminated cabling.
One of the advantages of plug-in terminals is that the terminals can be pre-wired on the bench or in a control cabinet before the relay itself has been issued to the wireman.
This approach has distinct economic advantages for the machine builder, system integrator or OEM.
There is also a benefit in that there is no damage to the relay should the terminal screw be inadvertently overtightened.
In a further development, Pilz is introducing innovative double-level cage clamp terminal blocks that enable two cables to be connected, each with a cross-section of up to 1.5 mm2, so it is easier to make loop-through connections.
Cage clamp terminals are extremely quick to connect, plus they ensure that the correct predetermined clamping force is applied.
With no need to apply crimp connectors to the cable before making the connection, assembly and commissioning times are reduced, leading to cost savings.
A separate opening in the terminals is provided to allow voltages to be checked.
Furthermore, the cage clamps' resistance to vibration gives a more reliable assembly in applications where vibration traditionally causes problems for screwed connections.
Other benefits for the cage clamp terminals are similar to those for the screwed plug-in terminals, such as the facility for pre-wiring the terminals and the ease and reliability with which damaged relays can be replaced.
The cage clamp terminals have the same plug geometry as the screwed plug-in terminals described above, so customers simply have to specify that they require cage clamp terminals when they place an order.
