Following the success of the Pilz "Guide to programmable safety systems", a PDF version of this invaluable book can now be viewed or downloaded for free from the Pilz support website.

This A5-sized publication runs to more than 200 pages and will be of interest to engineers and managers concerned with the safety of machinery and processes.

Pilz has prepared the guide in response to the growing importance of electrical, electronic, and programmable electronic safety-related systems, and the increasing expectation of executive bodies requiring companies to comply with the principles and procedures of IEC61508 (the series of standards for the functional safety of E/E/PES safety-related systems).

It is thought that there is no other comparable publication that covers the topic in such detail, providing theoretical and practical advice and guidance on how to comply with the relevant legislation.

The "Guide to programmable safety systems" can be read in conjunction with the Pilz "Guide to machinery safety" (now in its sixth edition, and also available as a free PDF download), which gives a detailed explanation of the principles of machinery safety, risk assessment, and the measures that can be taken to meet the requirements for CE marking and PUWER.

However, the "Guide to programmable safety systems" also includes an introductory chapter covering the background and relevant legislation, before going on to discuss general concepts relating to programmable safety systems, security, reliability, availability and diagnostics.

An entire chapter is devoted to the subject of programmable safety systems used within conventional fieldbus systems, and it includes descriptions of the major industrial fieldbus technologies and standards currently available.

Later chapters look in detail at the SafetyBus p safe, open fieldbus for safety-related data, and the compatible Pilz Programmable Safety System (PSS) for controlling safety-critical systems and processes.

Lastly, the appendix includes a glossary, bibliography, and a list of useful contacts, all of which help to make this an extremely useful book.

Visitors to the Pilz support website can navigate to the "Downloads" section and choose to view or download the guide chapter-by-chapter or in its entirety.

For those who would prefer to work with a traditional book, copies are available free of charge by contacting Pilz.
