Safety systems are put to the test
Pilz has developed a structured method for inspecting the safety-critical elements of plant and machinery to enable the suitability of the safety measures to be validated.
The 39-page document also makes it absolutely clear that general-purpose fieldbuses should not be assumed to be adequate for safety applications.
For those who are considering implementing a multipurpose fieldbus for conveying both safety and non-safety-related data, the guide explains that the key issue is to ensure that failures or changes in the non-safety-related system do not prevent any safety function from operating correctly.
And this is most readily achieved by keeping safety-related and non-safety-related systems separate from each other.
More information about BIP0014 "Selecting the best fieldbus for your application" (ISBN 0 580 44515 1) is available from Pilz, and copies can be purchased for GBP 34.
In addition, Pilz can also provide general help and advice in relation to safety fieldbuses.
