The National Health Service is not the only life-saving organisation that is celebrating its 60th birthday in 2008.
The National Health Service is to be congratulated on its 60th birthday on 5th July 2008, but there is another life-saving organisation that is also celebrating its 60th birthday this year, namely Pilz.
With a track record of continuous, market-leading innovation in the field of machinery and process safety, and with hundreds of thousands of products installed worldwide, Pilz has undoubtedly helped to prevent thousands of injuries and, most likely, fatalities too.
When a worker hits an emergency stop button, opens an interlocked guard or breaks a safety light beam, it is vital that the safety-related control system acts correctly.
Pilz is a family-owned German company with global operations.
Since its foundation in 1948, Pilz has remained at the forefront of safety technology, launching the first safety relay, the first programmable safety system, the first safe, open fieldbus system (SafetyBus p), the first solid-state safety relay, the first software-configurable modular safety controller, and the first safe camera system for monitoring three-dimensional zones.
In 2008, Pilz is still owned and run by descendents of the founder.
As with treatments available through the NHS, today's machinery and process safety systems are often far more complex than anything that was considered to be cutting edge 60 years ago.
Similarly, customers' expectations have moved on.
Today Pilz offers a full service that includes consultancy, engineering and training, as well as a broad range of products for safety-related control systems and general automation.
