Pilz poster advises on machinery-safety standards

A Pilz Automation Technology product story
Edited by the Engineeringtalk editorial team Dec 4, 2008

Pilz is offering a free poster to help users decide which functional safety standard to use and how to apply the selected standard.

The A1-poster contains diagrams and a glossary and advises on whether to work to EN IEC 62061 (Safety of Machinery - Functional Safety of Safety-Related Electrical, Electronic and Programmable Electronic Control Systems) or EN ISO 13849-1 (Safety of Machinery, Safety-Related Parts of Control Systems, Part 1: General Principles for Design).

A table at the top of the poster shows which standard is appropriate for machines incorporating electrical, electronic, programmable electronic, hydraulic, pneumatic or mechanical technologies.

The next section covers SIL (Safety Integrity Level) determination for EN IEC 62061 and PL (Performance Level) determination for EN ISO 13849-1.

For EN IEC 62061 projects, the next part of the poster explains realisation of the safety function and determination of the achieved SIL.

For EN ISO 13849-1 projects, the corresponding section on the poster addresses realisation of the safety function and determination of the achieved PL.

For both standards, verification is shown on the poster as the last step in the process.

The poster also contains information about the Pilz Pascal Safety Calculator for verifying functional safety in accordance with the requirements of EN IEC 62061 and EN ISO 13849-1.

Terms on the poster are explained in the glossary.
