Stemmer launches GigE Vision evaluation service

A Stemmer Imaging product story
Edited by the Engineeringtalk editorial team May 1, 2009

Stemmer Imaging has introduced the GigE Vision evaluation service for the vision industry.

Combined with a portfolio of machine vision cables, addressing those from Components Express Incorporated (CEI), GigE Vision is claimed to address the needs of high-bandwidth imaging in the demanding environment of industrial manufacturing.

Although, in principle, the GigE Vision and Genicam standards offer the opportunity to seamlessly integrate vision systems into a network environment using industry-standard Ethernet components, it has become apparent that care needs to be taken when adding vision to existing networks, according to the company.

Using two high-end test devices from Fluke, an entire network or sections of the network can be evaluated for suitability for vision applications.

Without suitable test equipment, troubleshooting can become extremely complex.

This test capability includes evaluating transmission capabilities for both copper and fibre cable.

Optical fibre cabling can test the purity of the fibre ends; alternatively, the attenuation of the fibres can be documented to ensure optimum operation of a system.

In addition to cable testing, the Fluke Optiview Series III network analyser also enables the measurement of the throughput rate of a network topology.

In addition, Stemmer has signed an agreement with CEI for the distribution of its range of cables and connectors in the UK.

This is part of a wider agreement that provides Stemmer Imaging with distribution rights in a number of European countries.

CEI is a manufacturer and supplier of cables and connectors for machine vision applications, including Gigabit Ethernet, Cameralink and Firewire data transmission standards, as well as analogue video cables.

An active research-and-development programme uses the latest technology to develop new generations of high-bandwidth cables that are longer and cheaper, while addressing the challenges of signal degradation, cable flexibility and mechanical robustness.
