Terminals provide plug-in convenience

A Phoenix Contact product story
Edited by the Engineeringtalk editorial team Sep 5, 2002

A novel range of rail-mounted terminals combines the convenience and speed of plug-in connections with the ease of use, versatility and durability of standard terminals.

Ideal for use in modular equipment, including railway systems, process machinery, cranes and conveyors, where subassemblies from a range of different suppliers need to be connected together, the new ST-Combi range of rail-mounted terminals from Phoenix Contact combines the convenience and speed of plug-in connections with the ease of use, versatility and durability of standard terminals.

As an added benefit, ST-Combi terminals feature spring-cage connections which greatly reduce wiring time, as well as automatically ensuring that all conductors are correctly clamped.

Each ST-Combi terminal comprises two components - the main part of the terminal, which is fitted to the mounting rail, and a plug-in section.

The plug-in elements can easily be combined in groups for multipole connections.

Accessories include strain relief devices to prevent cables being pulled out of the connectors, and locking clamps which guard against accidental disconnection.

Plug-in jumpers are also available, for use on either the rail-mounted section of the terminal or the plug-in section.

The jumpers can be inserted and removed, and their positions checked visually, whether the sections of the terminal are mated or separated.

ST-Combi terminals have a current rating of 24A, and can be used at up to 500V.

They can accommodate conductors up to 2.5mm2, yet are only 5.2mm wide, allowing them to be used in high-density applications.

Full protection against accidental contact with live parts is provided, even when the plug-in and base sections of the terminals are separated.

In addition to standard feed-through terminals, the new ST-Combi range from Phoenix Contact includes four-wire terminals, space-saving double-level terminals, and types which are specifically designed for use with screened cables.

Versions are also available which accommodate two wires for each incoming and outgoing connection.
