Petrochemical giant Atafina has chosen control systems based on Interbus equipment supplied by Phoenix Contact for the granule-handling installation at its plastics manufacturing plant in Feluy.

A key requirement for the installation, which handles 400,000t of plastic granules each year, is that it should operate continuously, as there is a significant risk of damage to the production equipment if the outflow of granules from the plant is interrupted.

The system designers for the installation, SAH, chose Interbus products to meet this crucial requirement on the basis of their proven performance in demanding industrial applications, and also because of their excellent diagnostic facilities which ensure that, should a problem occur, it can be rapidly localised and rectified.

In addition, since the Interbus modules use a plug-in format, if replacements are ever needed, they can be fitted easily and quickly.

Atafina's Interbus-equipped granule-handling installation comprises 90 stainless-steel silos, each with a capacity of 500m3.

The silos are continuously filled, and can be discharged into either road vehicles or sacks for despatch.

The plant also includes conveyor belts for granule handling, and is arranged so that it can be operated either automatically, or manually with monitoring provided by the control system.

For control purposes, the silos are divided into groups of five, each group having its own control panel.

This provides enabling and starting facilities, as well as allowing the silos' discharge valves to be opened and closed when the plant is under manual control.

In total, more than 1600 I/O points associated with these panels are connected to the Interbus network, overall control being provided by a Siemens S5 programmable controller, fitted with a Phoenix Contact Interbus IBS S5 DSC controller board.

"Production requirements meant that the new control system had to be installed and commissioned in the minimum time possible", said Marco Heyd of SAH, "and this was made possible by the fast and easy installation offered by the Interbus equipment.

In fact, we were able to commission the whole of the bus system within a few hours - it simply couldn't have been easier".

Interbus equipment from Phoenix Contact has proved an ideal control solution for Atafina, providing important benefits which include easy and cost-effective installation, because of the elimination of conventional field wiring; quick start-up because of Interbus's plug-and-work design; and minimal downtime because of the system's excellent reliability and powerful diagnostic features.
