Frequency convertors ease power
distribution
The frequency convertors can be provided with telemetering, remote monitoring, surveillance and systems that allows full observation of critical functions.
Power Systems International has released the EL series of solid state industrial frequency convertors with a 400Hz output or 60Hz output for point of use applications in laboratories, avionics repair workshops, hangars and for aircraft ground power in military locations and civil airports These compact dimensioned frequency convertors can be supplied in single or in parallel configuration to provide 400Hz or 60Hz power through a ring main distribution system for multiple- item point of use power outlets for service installations in workshops, hangars and in hard shelters
The frequency convertors can be supplied with a second output 28V DC for helicopter starting and for auxiliary generator starting duty for hangars, repair workshops for apron use and for off-shore helipads and landing platforms.
The centralised 400Hz system with multiple convertors connected in parallel and installed in a climatically controlled plant room would be the preferred scheme for installations at airports in geographic locations where very high ambient temperatures prevail.
Centralised 400Hz power distribution systems are ideal for the large multipoint installations.
The frequency convertors are configured in parallel to share equally the total load connected to the distribution system.
Line drop compensators or transformers are used at point of power take off to the aircraft to enable the distribution system to deliver a precisely regulated voltage at 400Hz to any aircraft, regardless of the number of aircraft connected to the distribution system.
The single-module 400Hz point of use application convertors can be installed adjacent to the passenger loading bridges or in workshops, hangars and other point of use applications adjacent to the aircraft parking place, where a centralised system with distribution would not be a cost-effective alternative consideration.
The frequency convertors can be provided with telemetering, remote monitoring, surveillance and systems that allows full observation of critical functions of the operational behaviour of the frequency convertors, the interfacing with the connected load and the power consumption at the point of use.
Frequency convertors located adjacent to every aircraft stand present a very cost-effective and flexible arrangement, especially on smaller installations where a pier has been added to a passenger terminal.
The single-module frequency convertors are simple to connect to normal mains sources and they can be located close to the aircraft without the need for pits, ducts or other apron excavation work.
The Power Systems International 400Hz frequency convertors, 60Hz frequency convertors and UPS systems have been supplied to Royal Air Force locations in the UK and other Commonwealth countries and to the defence forces of Oman, Kuwait, Qatar, Bahrain and the UAE.
Power Systems International offers design consultancy, manufacture and project management for the application of frequency convertor systems and power distribution for connecting into existing or new apron pit systems.
Power Systems International also supplies automatic cable handling and retrieval systems for passenger loading bridge mounting or the flexible Z fold crocodile systems for use at the apron point of aircraft parking and ground service.
400Hz frequency convertors are available in capacities of 2 to 25kVA with single-phase output and from 7.5 to 300kVA with a three-phase output designed for outdoor and hangar use in single or parallel configurations.
The 90kVA and dual 90kVA systems cover wide bodied aircaft up to the size of the A320.
The other standard sizes are 120, 180 and 220kVA covering the B747, A340 and the new A380.
The high-capacity 400Hz frequency convertors from 120kVA with three-phase output are provided with dual-output terminals intended for supplying large aircraft provided with dual-input feed points.
