Four-stage filter cleans up CO2 supplies

A novel filtration system for the beverage and bottling industries reduces product spoilage by ensuring the purification of the carbon dioxide used in the processes.

Parker Balston has developed a complete, up to four-stage filtration system, for the beverage and bottling industries, that reduces product spoilage by ensuring the purification of the carbon dioxide used in the processes The system assures users that the carbon dioxide gas stream meets The International Society of Beverage Technologists (ISBT) guidelines for carbonyl sulphide and hydrogen sulphide concentrations in carbon dioxide

The four stages for reducing product spoilage as a result of contaminated carbon dioxide are: a high efficiency coalescing filter; an activated carbon filter; a new beverage carbon dioxide purifier to remove the sulphur compounds; and an optional sterile filter.

The first stage, the high-efficiency coalescing filter, ensures protection from submicron particles and bacteria by removing any water, oil or dirt from the carbon dioxide.

Stage two is an activated carbon filter that removes general gaseous hydrocarbons.

Stage three is a new compact disposable filter element.

This effectively reduces the carbonyl sulphide and hydrogen sulphide concentrations, which are taste and odour contaminants, and also provides protection from upsets within the carbon dioxide supply stream.

Parker has developed a specially treated activated carbon medium with a pore structure that readily adsorbs the gaseous contaminants but excludes the primary gas.

This is held within a self-contained non-granular filter cartridge and will not pass downstream.

The cartridge can be changed in minutes and adds little pressure drop to the carbon dioxide delivery stream.

Parker's new, specially developed activated carbon media have a strong affinity for adsorbing other common vapours such as those from acetic acid, nicotine, dioxane, anline, propyl alcohol, iodine, chlorobenzene, cyclohexane, alcohol, phenol, ethyl acetate, benzene, rancid fats and oils, and lactic acid.

Commercially sterile gas is achieved by the optional stage-four final filter.
