The Product Lifecycle Management Interest Group (PLMIG) has published the results of the PLM Benefits Workshops held during March in London, UK and during April in Boston, Massachusetts.

The objectives of the workshops were: to bring together PLM practitioners and enable them to examine and evaluate their experiences in defining and measuring PLM benefits; to work through the whole scope of what an industry-standard benefits reference model should be; and to generate all of the draft material to create a workshop view of a PLM benefits framework.

The results of the workshops are contained in two 19-page summary documents, each of which embodies the views and expertise of the respective participants, collated into a clear definition of scope and structure.

The summary documents represent a new and independent body of knowledge about how to identify and treat the benefits that can be gained through PLM, and will enable participants to: understand their own position regarding the measurement of PLM; convey the message within their own organisations; and clarify the options for making new progress with PLM.

The benefits reference model initiative will continue with a global "Drivers for PLM" online survey, and a series of one-day workshops at user sites to enable companies to compare the results of the London and Boston events with their own PLM situation.

The objective of the PLM benefits reference model project is to develop an industry-agreed, standard PLM benefits model to help everyone involved in PLM move forward faster.

The model will enable manufacturing companies to implement PLM faster, and will reduce sales cycles for vendors of PLM products and services.
