Precision Motion (Cofil) argues the merits of cam indexers against servo drives.

The mathematics of any transfer motion are very important to the user It is essential that the maximum acceleration rate is as low as can be conveniently arranged

Why? Because the lower the maximum acceleration then : * The lower is the torque requirement.

* The less is the jerk.

* The more precise is the position achieved.

The less the jerk, the better for the machine longevity and the better for the product - especially if it is a liquid.

As a generalisation, a cam indexer will provide twice the performance of a servo at half the price.
